NT Domain to AD

I have an NT domain with a win2k member server. I want to
upgrade to AD and make the existing win2k server the DC.
Can I do that without upgrading the NT PDC, and how?
Thank you.

No, You will have to upgrade Your PDC to the Windows 2000 to get Your
domain to the Windows 2000 level.

You could promote a BDC to a PDC take the original PDC off line and then
upgrade your new PDC - that will give you an option to turn AD off if things
go wrong.

Basically there are 2 ways to move to Win 2k.
Upgrade, you MUST upgrade the NT 4.0 PDC first.

See:
How To: Upgrade Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298107

And migrate.

See:
How to Set Up ADMT for Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Migration

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260871

Each has it's pros and cons. You should research each way to see which way
suits your environment best.

Example: do you need to have NT 4.0 BDCs once you move to Win 2k? If so that
leaves out migrating since you need to have the Win 2k domain in native
mode, in native mode replication does not occur between a Win 2k DC and NT
4.0 BDCs.

Do you need to keep the same domain name? If so upgrading may be your best
bet. You can not use ADMT (migrate) if the two domain names are the same.
You would need to work out renaming the NT 4.0 domain before hand. It is
near impossible to rename a Win 2k domain.

You should take your time and work out your plan. You have to make decisions
during setup that may require a format to recover from.
