Nt backup looking for backup device

Greg

Hi,

I'm having a problem on several XP pc's when trying to use
the ntbackup utility. Whan launching the backup utility it
says: "looking for backup devices" and that's it. This
stays on the screen for hours. I checked the event viewer
and it seems that the removable storage service is stopped.
I tried to launch it manually from the services in
computer management, but I'm unable to start it.
The removable storage service is depinding on the RPC
service. This service is running on the machine.
There is no special backup device connected to the pc's.
The only thing what I would like to doe is to backup the
computer to a shared network drive.
On the pc there is no cd-writer software installed. This
sometimes causes the problem!
There has no software been added since last time when it
worked!
Does anybody have an idea what can cause the removable
storage service to crash?

Thanks,

Greg

Hi,

you can stop or disable Removable Storage service if you don't have tape
device in your system. Once the service is stopped try to run ntbackup
again...

Thanks for your response, but it doesn't work.
By default it's stopped.
The problem is that I can't start it.
When I disable it and try to launch ntbackup again I get
an error message that the removable storage is disabled
and can't continue!
Any idea?

Txs,

Greg
