Notification Icons won't reapond through properties

I've tried all the "fixes" and still can't get the notification area to
respond to any changes except to hide the date!!! All this comes after todays
Microsoft security update. Never disappeared or refused to respond till
today. My volume icon and my Antispyware beta version both won't respond to
any settings or combination of settings including locking the taskbar--any
ideas besides going into the registry???

There weren't any security updates released for XP today as far as I
know. What exactly did you install?

Try a system restore to a date just prior to the install of that update.

Restore didn't work, already did that--. I'm not sure what update came in
there was the little update icon on the tray, said click on it to view
updates and it asked to install now, and reboot like it always does--at least
once a week, it may have been Norton (symantec) per my logs. The Notification
Area doesn't respond at all to inputs through the properties dialogue--except
the clock will turn off. I have so many autoupdates to spyware, windows and
antivirus programs that it's hard to keep up with them!!
