Notification icons suddenly missing

For months my taskbar settings have stayed the same. Then today when I
started up, all the icons (normally 12) in the notification area were
missing. I've tried logging off and on several times, but that doesn't
help. Kelly's Taskbar Repair Tool seems to have no effect on *any* of
the settings. Disabling UnPnP and SSDP changes nothing. Are there
registry settings I should check?

Yes, I use auto-logon, Kelly, but have entered my password each time I
logged off and back on. I've also started using a small program that
delays the loading of startup applications, in case that's a possible
cause. None of the tweaks in your list seem to help; moreover, Task
Manager won't let me terminate the explorer process. Weird.

Thanks for your suggestions, Kelly, but there was no change with or
without the delayed launches at startup. So I did a system restore two
days back and recovered all the icons. I wonder if Longhorn will deal
with the various taskbar problems; they appear to be quite common.

On a more important note...I mourn Alex Nichol's passing with the rest
of the NG community. He was a model MVP and true gentleman.

I believe this problem is solved if you go to My Network Places, and on the
left panel click on "Hide my UPnP devices". I had the same problem and this
solved it. Let me know if it works.
