Do you have the little circle with the arrow in it at the left of the tray. If you do try right-click and Customize Notifications. Maybe they are all set to "Always hide", although I cannot think why they should be.
Thanks for your reply. I have done this. The problem is that the checkbox
is grayed out, therefore I can't check or un-check the option for hide
icons.

go into the properties of the taskbar, where you have the checkbox for hide
inactive icons, click customize and see what each icon is set to.
Thanks for your reply. Went to first reference you gave. This was Ramesh's
site. On page 1 of this site about half way down I saw the resolution for
my problem. Followed this and it solved my problem. Thank you and Steve
for your help. Problem solved.
