Icons in Notification area of taskbar - problem

Why has my Volume (speaker Icon) disappeared from my notification area?

I have it selected (tick box) in the Sound Properties, but to get it to show
up I have to untick/apply/tick/apply in the sound properties.

If I reboot its gone again.

Also, similar problem with programs in my startup menu e.g. Logitech
Setpoint software should put an icon in the notification area, it used to
but something has changed and I don't know what. Same with my temp
monitoring software, should startup as it in the startup menu and should put
an icon in the notification area, but it no longer does. Again, any options
to include the icon in the notification area ARE selected.

I haven't knowingly changed the way I boot up, there is only one user (me)
as administrator, and that's the way I boot up.

Any ideas

Sorry...just to add.... I don't have "Hide Inactive Icons" selected, and
checking the icons settings those that show AND those that done all have
"Hide when Inactive" selected..but like I said I don't have them hidden
anyway.

Start > Run and type msconfig
Choose "Normal Startup"
This should solve your problem.

Nope... didn't solve it. "Normal Startup" was already selected, but even so
I deselected/reselected it, applied it and rebooted as it instructed. Still
made no difference, volume icon missing as it Setpoint software icon. The
Volume icon should be there because its selected in the Sound Options setup,
the Setpoint icon should be there because it selected in its own setup menu,
but also the program is in the start menu. Its as if the startup menu is not
being read/executed???

Have had similar problem with this "icon" issue since upgrade from 2000 to Xp
and everything I've tried hasn't seemed to help.
I've re/de-installed Soundmax and any an all appropriate drivers/options,
used system restore several times, tried to get any/all updates from
adminsitrative-(small kb downloads)custom updates from MS, gone to control
panael for audio devices and re-installed/updated, got special high
definition Audio Driver Package -K88811, tried to install AC-97 pack from
somehwere, and still: this elusive icon shows up when it feels like it (along
with others) that seem to have a mind of their own.
See also if these threads by going under "audio" in Set-up and Deploy, for
dates 8/8-16/2006, or type "no audio", or Audio, or "Sounds".
Good luck-I've given up.

If you set the icons to "always show" does that not do it..

Yes but its not just my audio icon, its also programs in my startup menu
which start and should show an icon in the notification area !!!!

UPDATE..... FIXED IT !!! Disabled the Universal PnP service, all icons now
load normally.

Thanks to those who offered suggestions.

Do you mind if I ask how you did that? New to many of (computers)XP's options
and don't have manual.

Go to Start/Run and type: services.msc and press OK. In the Services window, scroll down to "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" and double click that item to open the properties dialog. In the Startup Type: click the drop down menu and select Disabled. Apply/OK.

As Ronnie said !

OR... to be honest, I used TuneUp Utilities 2006, and in its System Control
menu/Communication-Network option/Advanced tab/ is an option to
enable/disable PnP. I simply removed the tick from the box!!!!!

I had enabled the option on purpose, but I have to admit I don't understand
the relationship between the problem I experienced with the icons and the
PnP service being enabled !!! I just read another thread further down this
NG which lead me to try disabling PnP...et voila !!

Thank you both Ronnie and Ginga!
Will save to XP fixes folde/other. Out of curiostity-and if your in the
mood to answer, why not have option as as "automatic"? Does that then not
allow for XP to manage itself or is it just one of those weird quirks?
Thank you again for all those contributors to this great site!

I will let Ronnie answer that one because I don't know the answer :-(

The 3 settings for services are fairly straight forward.

Automatic = The service will automatically start at boot up.
Manual = The service is enabled but will not start until an XP component makes a request for that service.
Disabled = The service cannot start.

Some software/hardware components expect a service to be started automatically and ready for use at any time. These components do not recognize the 'manual' setting and this can cause a glitch resulting in program errors.

You must be very cautious when making decisions about how to configure services in XP.

Open Services.msc and access the Help for more information.

I had the same problem, all you have to do is go to my network places &
there's an option there to show or not show icons for networked UPnP
devices, simple as that!!!!, Phil
