xp pro service pack 2-motherboard Intel 945gntlr
I began to notice that some of the icons in the system notification area had
disappeard...volume..safely remove hardware...and others
when I insert a flash drive i get a sound but no safely reomove hardwar icon
appears. I created another user (administrator group) and logged on as that
new user...all icons are there.
logged off and logged on as me and all icons there..deleted new user and
shut down and logged on as me ..most icons had disappeared...in short..if i
create a new user in administrators group and log on as me I have all the
icons in the notification area .. I have checked always show in the
properties dialog but it does not help...any ideas ? i don't want to have any
other users but me and the guest and the administrator...thanks

Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service.

Did not work for me. (The one icon i'm missing is the two little monitors
for the Internet connection. All of a sudden it's gone.) I also tried
right-click on taskbar> properties, where the icon I want is tantalizingly
shown under "old or seldom-used icons - I picked "always show" but this did
not work either. Not only that, but in 'windows help' it tells you to go to
network connections & then pick either 'LAN' or 'Internet' - my XP prof. does
not have either one.

Windows is a disaster.

Network Connections should show *YOUR* connection.

It may be called Local Area Connection or it may be called High-Speed
Internet.

There may be more than one connection listed.

Whatever it is called, you have at least one.

Open Network Connections...
Click Start, then click Run, type: ncpa.cpl and click OK.
Right click *YOUR* connection.
Cllick on Properties.
On the General tab, click on: Show icon in notification area when connected.
Make sure that the box gets a check mark.
Click OK.
Close Network Connections.

If that doesn't work, go here...
