After a disastrous crash following a power cut I have had to totally reinstall my Windows XP Home. Now I have a sys tray full of all kinds of junk. Can anyone tell me of a quick way to empty it?

TIA

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose
of running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many
people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how many of
these programs you run, but which. Some of them can hurt
performance severely, but others have no effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with at
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.

Grin, you have a big brand pc eh? Open the apps and tell them NOT to
start on startup.

Start, control panel, appearance and themes, task bar and start menu, ( under
"notification menu" ) customize, ( modify the behavior ) , OK, apply, OK (
This only removes the icons )

I'd go to run\msconfig and shut off all of the programs that you don't use.
I notice a performance drop with Quicktime running in the background.
(Enough to notice the difference anyway.)

Thanks for all that, Ken.

I agree with all you say and have already dealt with that side. I've managed
to cut out most of the chaff since writing.

Anyway, maybe you can help me with this - I've lost all my tips when I
crashed. - I want to stop those irritating balloons. Do you know how? (I'll
post this under a new heading if you think I should).

You're welcome, and glad you agree.

TweakUI is a good way to do this.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

(if you have SP1 installed)

or

(if you don't have SP1).

Hi Ed,

Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.

Other options for removal:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup (Line 148)

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit

Or use this automated edit:

Disable Balloon Tips or Disable All (Row 11)

Disable All includes: Balloon Tips, Folder Contents Info Tips, Explorer
Pop-Ups, Show Info Tips, Start Menu and Notification Area.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Thanks, Kelly.

Sorry to be so long getting back - still having problems. I've had to
reformat to get over the problems caused by the power failure. For what it
is worth, my PC was shutting down when the power failure struck. Caused all
kinds of headaches.

Anyway, thanks for the help.
As usual, you're right on the ball!

Best wishes,

Ed
