Programs in sys tray

Something programs that I have open which show up as they should in the task
bar will close to the sys tray. If I click on them, they return to the task
bar and are back where they left off. Not sure why this is happening because
a lot of these programs have no function to close to sys tray so it seems
something maybe in Win XP Pro is doing this on certain events and I can not
figure out why. While I do use some utilities to aid me along when using the
computer, I do not have anything that I believe would force this behavior
onto other programs being used. There is no consistency is this behavior
either. Anyone have any ideas? Is Win XP Pro doing this somehow? This is a
pretty fresh install and through all of my other installs, I can not ever
recall seeing this exhibited before. Thanks much for any thoughts and
answers you can provide.

Examples?

Programs that do, those that don't?

That's a new one, and I suspect it's caused by a utility you have
running, as you surmised. One thing that might help by resetting the
default actions:

Line 240. Programs Aren't Minimized in the Taskbar

This program will minimize any program to the tray. That won't help
you, unless you're running the program, but it shows that it's possible
to do it intentionally:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 159. Minimize Any Program to System Tray

Or just try this Taskbar fix, or some of the tweaks listed on the
Taskbar+ Home Page:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 298. Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!

One of the many other tweaks listed at Kelly's site:
Line 164. Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality
