notification area icons not showing up

Okay, here's the deal: I have my taskbar setting to automatically hide
inactive icons. it usually works fine. There's a little arrow that will let
me click to see the icons that are being hidden, right?

Well, today, the darn arrows went away, and there are icons that didn't
reappear for programs that are running. I turned the thing off, and the
icons *still* aren't there!

I didn't reboot the computer, because I only rebooted it a few hours ago. My
sound icon won't show up when I first reboot, so I have to log off and log
back in to see it. Then everything else loads as well. (I can live with
that, but it's aggravating to have to do it)

Now, my sound icon is gone, and the icon for AIM is gone as well, along with
a couple of other programs that I know are running on the machine.

Is this another MS 'glitch' for XP that I'm just going to have to live with,
since apparently it's been going on for some time and no one cares enough to
find a fix for it?

Thanks. The first one worked for now. This didn't happen at start up,
although it does happen then, too. I was working on the computer and
suddenly the chevron disappeared and so did most of my notification area
icons (including the speaker icon), but the programs were still running.

I logged off, then back in, and the icons were back, but the chevron wasn't
coming up. I went in and marked the first icon to 'always hide' and the
chevrons are back.

Thanks for the assistance. I don't feel comfortable disabling SSDP or the
PnP discovery service.

(now if I could only get my Outlook Express toolbar icons to stay put, I'd
be a happy camper.)
