Nothing works!!

So here is the deal. A couple weeks ago, I defragmented my drives and went to
bed while they worked. The next morning my girlfriend noticed a lot of
windows open, and End Task'd all of them. Then, there was nothing on the
screen except our desktop picture... not even the start bar! A couple times I
could still hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and get the Task Manager to look around on my
computer and all my stuff was still there, just with no way to look at it.

Does anyone have ANY idea what the heck happened? Or how to fix this???
Please?

Open the task manager, click file, new task (run) and type 'explorer.exe'
without the quotes. If that doesn't popup your taskbar and desktop then
click on the processes tab and kill any other explorer.exe processes and try
again... If that STILL doesn't get it running...

Run this "%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe" (again without the
quotes) and restore it to a date and time prior to this happening.

There is a shutdown button on the task manager. Shut it down and restart it.

The task manager does not open. CTRL+ALT+DEL only makes the mouse turn into
the hourglass for a split second, then nothing happens.

Can you boot into Safe Mode?
Sounds like the defrag may have corrupted (well, uncovered some corrupted
files - more like it) some files - this could be bad news in itself.

You may want to try safe mode - see if that works.
If you get in, restore the system to the day before the problem..

Otherwise - Try "Last Known Good Configuration boot..

Beyond that - a Repair installation and check the driver for errors.

I unplugged my computer and then plugged everything back in and turned it on
again, and then my task manager did indeed pop up. I did the restore via the
file name you gave me and it worked!!! You have no idea how grateful I am!!
Thank you so much

Excellent, glad to know it worked for you.
