Notepad wont open with double click

When I click on a NOTEPAD .txt file, it wont open up notepad. I have to go
to Start> All programs and open notepad, THEN browse to the file to open it.
I have tried to Rightclick>properties >open with and choose NOTEPAD but it
doesnt work. I am running Windows XP pro, I dont have the original disk, can
someone help me please.either here or Email me at (e-mail address removed)

Sounds like the ".txt" file extension needs to be re-
assigned to notepad.exe this will enable doubleclick
opening of files again

In windows explorer click tools, folder options, file
types browse to .TXT and re assign notepad.exe in
windows/system32 as the viewer

I have the same problem. I have already scanned it for viruses and tried reassigning it the problem seems to lie in the security setting runas.exe automatically sets and my comp will not let me change
