notepad malfunction

I can no longer open .txt files in notepad. Origionally
it would say "cannot find notepad". Now it just says that
the files are not valid win32 applications.
How do I repair this?
If I reinstall windowsXP as an upgrade will I loose
anything on my computer as it is, i.e. programs or files?
