Notepad no longer opens .txt files. Origionally it said
that it could not find notepad, now it says that the .txt
files are not valid win32 applications.
How do I fix this?

If I reinstall windowsXP as an upgrade will I loose any
files or programs installed on my computer?

No, you do not want to reinstall Windows XP as an upgrade.
Use the following procedure:

Do a search for notepad.exe on your system . You should have several
instances of it but the main one is in the system32 folder of WINNT. If
it is not in this folder copy one of the other instances there . Some early
versions of CWSHREDDER caused this notepad difficulty.Try the other
suggestions as in the above replies as well.
