An observation re Notepad

An observation re Notepad:
If you save anything creating text with Notepad set on "Wrap text," Notepad
will inject paragraph marks at the end of each line where it's wrapped. If
you don't want that to happen, you must turn off "Wrap text," which is sort
of impractical. Anyway, that's irritating. I have, however, found a way to
save a .txt file without those line-by-line paragraph marks: use MS Word
and save as text.

THANK you SO much for that.

I've been waiting almost 15 years for that solution! <smirk>

This is not correct: Notepad will not "inject" any paragraph marks.
It will simply break the screen line shortly before the right edge of
the frame. You can easily verify this: Drag the right edge left, then
right again. The lines keep adjusting themselves. If paragraph marks
had been inserted then the "shortened" lines would remain shortened.

The 'wrap' is confined to viewing in notepad. If you save the file and
open in a normal text editor, line breaks only occur where you pressed
newline when in notepad.
If you open in Word, word will wrap between margins. No special marks
are injected into the file. The cr/lf will only be visible if you elect
to show paragraph marks.

Since you repeat more or less what I said, I assume that
you're replying to the OP, not to me.

Please note the critical word in what I stated: SAVE

"If you SAVE anything creating text with Notepad set on "Wrap text," Notepad
will inject paragraph marks at the end of each line where it's wrapped. If

of impractical. Anyway, that's irritating. I have, however, found a way to

Perhaps "insert" is the better word vs. "inject"; however, upon SAVING the
text document created with Notepad, the end of each line (at whatever width
you had Notepad) is ended with a paragraph mark. The next time you open
the file, all the lines of that document will be a fixed length, because
each line ends with a paragraph mark.

I'm aware that you wrote "Save" but your claim is still incorrect.
Saving a notepad.exe file with "wrap lines" set to active will
NOT insert any paragraph markers. Here is how you can
prove it to yourself:
1. Launch notepad.exe.
2. Make its width about half of your screen.
3. Activate "Word Wrap".
4. Write a text that spans 3 lines. Do NOT press {Enter}
at any time.
5. Save the file as c:\Wrapped.txt. According to your theory,
it should have at least two paragraph markers.
6. Deactivate "Word Wrap".
7. Save the file as "c:\Unwrapped.txt".
8. Open the file c:\Wrapped.txt. According to your theory,
there should be two paragraph markers. Where are they?

Just tested your little theory and it is wrong.

Saved a 5 line file with word wrap turned on and then turned
off word wrap, and of course it went off the right of the
screen, and did a save as to a different filename. Opened
both in Word and turned on Paragraph marks. Both files were
identical with only one paragraph mark present and that was
at the end of the file.

Yes, if you turn off word wrap, that's a different story.

Actually it is the same story. Both files, one created with
word wrap on and one created with word wrap off created the
identical file when viewed in MS Word with the paragraph
marks turned on. Only the final paragraph mark was visible.
Spaces between words had the normal dot between them but no
other special characters. Your theory is wrong or you have
issues with your computer.

Jack,

Please note: PD43 was being sarcastic. He was pulling your
leg. He might as well have said "Thank you so much for telling
me that the earth is flat." If you insist that your notepad earth
is flat then so be it. Your minde is obviously made up - there
no point in trying to confuse you with the facts.

I suggest you try using the Emacs text editor. After you start using Emacs
you will not need to use Notepad very much any more.

Are you saying that you have discovered that the earth is not
flat, after all? If so then this would be a major breakthrough
for you!

Jack, did you notice the "smirk" in that reply? The respondent was
being sarcastic. You are flat-out wrong about Notepad. If you indeed
observe this behavior on your computer, you have either some problem
or not the vanilla Notepad that MS ships.

J

Jack B

Facts are facts. It happened.
I had done several things in Notepad for insertion into a website page.
Upon later loading Notepad and opening the file(s) I intended to copy onto
the webpage, I discovered each line in Notepad had a break at the point
where it was configured when saved. I did some testing and discovered that
every time I saved with Word wrap on, I got the same results.
If you indeed observe this behavior on your computer, you have either some
problem or not the vanilla Notepad that MS ships.<

My Notepad is the same one that came with the pc and Win XP. I'm not saying
that there was not some pc problem (the situation no longer exists), but I
tested it several times and got the same results. Obviously, PD43 also had
the problem.

Not obvious at all. I recommend you look up the
meaning of "sarcasm" in your dictionary.
