Notepad low mem error message

Got me another problem....this time w/ Notepad.

3-yr old (?) clone desktop; Celeron 2.7 GHz, 256 MB RAM, Win XP Pro SP2
recently re-installed.

Problem: Whenever open medium-size text file in Notepad, get error:

Not enuf mem available to complete this op'n. Quit 1 or more
aps to incrs available mem and then try again.

File has increased in size gradually since 1 April 07. It is now 42 KB.
Problem started few days ago, after re-install XP. If knock it down to
~28 KB, works ok and also auto-enters the time/date again.

This is all reminiscent of the old version Notepad in Win 98, which used
to conk out for me at around 30KB, w/ similar message. Never did find
out if this was normal.

I temp doubled RAM to ~ 256 MB, which dramatically increased
performance but didn't solve Notepad problem. Let system manage
virtual mem now. Did a defrag too. No change.

Checked tons of related problems via google. Very enlightening, memory
leaks and all and something about "ctrl+n" - but no real solutions.
Searched all forums here as well w/ many keywords, etc. No luck.

I posted other queries on recent problems w/ this puter to here & others.
It had a blown MBR but recognized as Slave. Was able to fix via the Win
XP re-install. Screwed up & didn't save my 'Files and Settings' - tho'
I tried (finally did it right at another puter, tho').

There are v. few programs loaded now and not much in Start Menu. Yet it
kept getting slower & slower. It got impossible when I accidentally
allowed WinZip 11 to install the Google functions, subsequently removed.
It suddenly went back to normal when temp-doubled the RAM.

No bugs; caches clean; disk cleaner run, et. al. Office not re-installed
yet.

(The old 'Program Files' folder is choking w/ aps but of course none
are in the Registry any more and don't work, 'caus didn't save the
Settings; yet previous performance was fair before the crash and
also right after the re-install).

So I'm wondering what's going on. The simplest assumption is that
somehow:

1) I got me an old or corrupt Notepad version in here and
2) the 1st mem card is going bad (re the slow performance).

Clutching at straws. The odd part in this case is that when click "OK"
on the pop up message, the file comes up in Notepad anyway and
editing/augmenting it is no problem. Just that annoying beep message.

At moment be happy just to get Notepad working right. Use it a lot.
Probably should try re-installing it first.

10:03 24-Apr-07 - Not sure on how re-install Notepad standalone. Did a
Win XP "upgrade" this morn in hopes of seeing something about "repair your
current win installation" or something like that. No luck. Maybe
this has to be done via "Setup" choice at Control Panel somewhere -
but not sure yet where.

The upgrade didn't fix a thing (far as I know) but just gave me
another headache. The installation called for:

"The VIAAP1.SYS on VIAAGP Filter Driver Disk". Wouldn't have a clue!

BTW, our service provider here was down this morn again so couldn't
let the installer go on the net to look for some kind of updates,
as it had earlier (before the message) requested. This may or may
not have solved the problem. But I'm not keen to repeat an entire
upgrade again just to check this theory. Didn't get that error
on the initial install.

And going on the Net looking for drivers is like looking for a needle
in a haystack. In most cases of this nature, can't get thru to a
manufacturer (specially video card drivers) and just get tons of
these websites trying to download their corruptive programs and later
tell you they'll sell you the driver - which you can't make heads or
tails of the model because they often give you a dozen choices, none
of which often look right.

In the process they apparently upload all YOUR drivers for free and
then re-sell them. Or they might inadvertently (or purposely even)
corrupt a driver (which seems to have occurred in my case). In one
case I got only 2 drivers listed as requiring updates; in another I
got 10 from another website scanner.

I tried checking Kellys-Korner - which is looking real good these days -
but not found anything yet on this Notepad thing; tho' I'd like to
thank Kelly profusely for the '.vbs' Reg patch which instantly fixed
my disappearing open windows on DeskTop when tried minimize to
Taskbar.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Thank you Kelly, wherever you are, for your kind and selfless
contributions to this never-ending battle. Your site has got to
be Nr. Uno by now! It's so marvellously well organized. Must have
taken a great deal of very meticulous work and determination -
just for that part alone.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anyone have any suggestions on all this?

Appreciate any and all.

You texted "upgraded again today" to xp,upgraded from which OS....Either way,
an "upgrade" is'nt a very good choice.Simply install xp cd,boot to xp
cd,select
install xp,new copy,delete the partition(s),create one,then xp formats &
performs
a clean install. If upgrading from an older windows OS,youre upgrading in
FAT32,
xp runs on NTFS file system,+ an upgrade stores alot of the old OS,xp doesnt
need.Also,256mb of ram is at the min. of amount xp needs,512mb is somewhat
ok,and youre best bet is to set virtual memory to "let system manage"..

OK, Andrew, thanx for the prompt reply. Been there, did all that - well,
almost anyway. Guess I wasn't v clear in my post.

In actual fact, I prefer FAT 32. That's my choice, thanx and it's 1 of 2
options. I do
a bit of work w/ DOS. Old fashioned. Originally I did have partition 2 or 3
formatted w/NTFS. To be sure, the latter has its pro's - as well as cons.
Fortunately, its not
mandatory for my simple setup here.

The first was a new install from XP CD (I believe, as you suggest), mainly
to repair
the MBR and keep my stuff on there intact and have the Drive accessible and
bootable (Master). That part went OK; but, ss I said before, I goofed on the
'Files & Settings' thing, so altho all my aps are still there, nothing works
and have to reinstall them too.

The 2nd, this morning, was an "Upgrade" from the same XP CD, 'cos I thought
it would repair the Notepad issue - which is all I wanted to accomplish as
all else (except for the 'slow performance' - probably due to the low mem or
damaged mem) seemed AOK. Well, also as I said, that didn't fix Notepad.

So, in all honesty, I'm really only interested in some info on the Notepad
issue
right now. Altho' there's little or nothing on it in these forum archives
here, it's
a known issue on the Net - but without any real solution offered so far that
I could find.

I included all the other info in my post, mainly for background, in case
someone
here recognized a clue in there somewhere and could set me straight on where
I might have gone wrong or off track enough to cause the Notepad low mem
error message.

To reiterate, I did not have any such Notepad or low performance issues (even
only w/ the original 128 MB RAM in there) w/ the original OS and setup -
prior
to the time the MBR got destroyed and I had to do an OS re-install.

BTW, I did set virtual memory to "let system manage".. and, FYI, the
"Upgrade"
took just as long (a bit longer, in fact) than the first, full install I did
the other day.

So, thanks for your input, Andrew and for sure, you're indubitably right on
all that.
But if I have to go thru ALL THAT AGAIN, I'll have to pass and just put up w/
that error message; tho', of course, I'm still hoping for a simpler fix.

Thanks again.
