Notebook Touchpad not working

I have a Compaq Presario 1690 Notebook purchased with
windows 98 installed. I upgraded to XP and updated all
drivers, but my touchpad is not working. In fact, windows
will not even recognize that the touchpad is there. I
downloaded the driver from the Synaptics web site , but it
doesn't do any good if the computer won't recognize the
hardware. The touchpad is not listed anyway in the add
hardware section. Can anyone help me with this?

Did you ask Compaq technical support? What did they tell you? Knowing that
will narrow down the list of possible solutions.

hmmm...see if u can activate it by using the fn and a function key. the
function key should look like a hand pointing to a screen. but the hardware
should be seen anyways..hmm. try scanning for harware changes in the devices
manager. if i can think of something else i will post it.

I asked Compaq Support. They first told me to download
the correct driver, but the computer still won't recognize
the touchpad. They then told me to go to the control
panel and click on the "printers and other hardware" icon,
but it doesn't seem to be present in my control panel.
They wanted me to then click on the mouse tab then enable
the touch feature. I have a "mouse" icon in the control
panel, but it doesn't have anything about the touchpad
feature. The device manager still won't detect the
touchpad, and I don't know how to manually enable it. Do
you know of any further solutions?

Hi, I had a similar problem (also on a compaq presario)

I contacted the compaq online chat helpline. They gave me the location to pull down the latest driver (looks like you have that already) but they also gave me a firmware update to deploy. That fixed the problem. Suggest you try the same. The online chat staff appear a lot more knowledgeable than the staff you talk to on the phone, so I suggest you gone online

Good luck

Sam
