Hello,

WinXP Home. I am working on a friend's notebook that is running really slow.
Not only that, its just also doing some strange things. First of all, when
it boots up, Windows Media Player opens automatically. I checked the
settings in WMP, but I cant even find a setting to that effect. I also
scanned the drive for startup folders and WMP was not in any of them.

I am not able to run Live Update for Symantec AntiVirus. I just reinstalled
it and still cant. I scanned for viruses, and it didn't find any. Of course
the virus def is the one that shipped with the CD.

I was thinking about running MSConfig and stopping all services then
restarting them on at a time. The problem is when I try to run it, nothing
happens. I think this is the most important issue. Am I right?

I ran AdAware and it found a boat-load of stuff which I deleted. That still
hasn't helped.

I tried to run SpyBot. It wouldn't run, so I reinstalled it and it still
does not run. It gives me an "access is denied error". The user I am logged
in is the computer admin. There is no Administrator user in Users from
Control Panel. I also tried to go to Local Users and Groups, but could not
since it was XP Home. SpyBot does bring an error message when registry
changes are made, but I cannot open the program.

I rebooted and checked the log file, but I only get two errors.

Security Log:

Source: Security

Category: Policy Change

Type: Failure Audit

EventId: 615

Description:

IPSec Services: IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of network
interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security hazard to the
machine since some of the network interfaces may not get the protection as
desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run IPSec monitor snap-in to
further diagnose the problem.

Application Log:

Source: Perflib

Category: None

Type: Error

EventId: 1015

Description:

The timeout waiting for the performance data collection function ".NET CLR
Data"in the "C:\WINDOWS\System32\netfxperf.dll" Library to finish has
expired. There may be a problem with this extensible counter or the service
it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy when this
call was attempted.

Finally, the disk is defragmented so that cant be the problem.

This has to be some sort of virus or something. Any ideas on what this might
be, thanks?

Chris

Thanks for the quick response. I have been trying to do the Panda scan for a
while and am having problems, so I am trying Trend's online scan. We will
see if that works.
