Notebook HDDs Considerations

Hi all,

There are many reviews comparing 5.4k and 7.2k rpm 2.5" HDDs.
Performance-wise, it seems a 7.2k rpm 60 GB HDD still beats a
5.4k rpm 80 GB one, even though the latter has a higher
recording density.

It seems to logical to assume that a 7.2k draws more energy
and thus generates more noise and heat than an similarly
designed 5.4k. Since the discussion is about notebook HDDs,
factors such as heat, power, and noise seem pretty important.

For instance, the power requirements for Hitachi's 7.2k and
5.4k 2.5" HDDs are identical except at spin-up, but the noise
for 7.2k is also higher. Are these power and noise difference
small enough to be negligible? What are your opinions?

Tia

I just bought the 80gb drive because capacity and low current draw was most
important for this particular application. I might choose the 7200 rpm
drive for a different application, it just depends what its for. They both
have their place in the market. By the way, capacity was the main reason I
chose the 80gb drive, like you say the electrical difference isn't really
much. 80gb is pretty amazing on a 9.5mm thick drive.

I have both 7200 60 GB and 5400 80 GB drives in my Inspiron 8100.
They are both great units, for different reasons.

The 7200 replaced an older 5400 RPM 40 GB. The difference in speed was
immediate and noticeable. Since I do a lot of Photoshop work and my
machine is maxed out at 512 MB, I swap to disk a lot, and the faster
drive has been a big help. It also greatly reduces load and boot time.

This may surprise you, but the 7200 (hitachi 7k60) is actually very
quiet. I recommend it highly.

cheers,

In the reviews that I have seen, the 7.2k drives didn't produce more
noice, heat or drew more energy than the 5.4k drives. The differences
in that were all very small, and certainly not big enough to determine
which drive to buy for your laptop.
