Hello to all!
I need to buy one hard-drives for a pc that will stay up 24/24h up (ok
ins't a server that will run for years without stopping..but will stay
up something as 24/24h for days..) and/or as bakcup drive
....So as that you can imagine the first need it's reliability, and after
(less important in the case of backup-drive..) it's good if it will run
with low noise and heat (so also less Watts sucked by it)
So...the first thing that i have thought was to choose for 5400rpm
drive ..this cause 'theorically'(..or considering just the rpm) a low
rotation will give more probably the charatheristic that i need..than a
7200rpm.
But i have said "theorically", why? cause it's need (and i don't..) to
know if one of the 7.2k rpm available use tecnology that allow to have
the advantages of 5.4k available (reliability, low
noise/heat/watts-consume ) on the market (the most at now are the
samsung available in all gb size..and just some in few gb size from wd
and saegate)... *Do you know if there is?
Times ago i have thought to choose for a Samsung 5400rpm at 160gb, at
cause also of it's love price than other 100/160gb hard-disk...but at
nowdays the same samsung but at 7200 / or of other productor (at 7,2k
rpm) don't cost so much than it...so (i repeat: considering that i don't
know if there are 7200 that it's similar to a 5400 in the advantage that
i request)...it's hard to choose..

Any help or advise will be appreciate ;)

Greetings!

Yes, 5400 rpm drives do generally use less power
than 7200 rpm drives and so should be more reliable
at least in theory, just because they stay cooler,
particularly when the cooling isnt that great.

It is likely that the 5400 rpm samsung should be more reliable.

But for the ultimate in reliability, there is no substitute for
using more than one backup, say using DVDs as well, with
those taken off site, so that even if the place burns down
or it looted by some thieving druggy, you still have the data.
