WD warranty, Noisy drive

Hi, does anyone know if WD will exchange a noisy drive under warranty? Ive got
an ata100 7200 rpm 80 gig wd drive that is noisy as hell. I dont mean read and
write noises (which are kinda loud anyway). I mean that the drive whines really
loud. Not so much loud but at a sonic frequency that really cuts to your ears.
Its a high pitch whine that is really annoying. I switched it out to another
machine in favor of a maxtor drive of similar specs and it is silent. Im told
that the bearings may be bad and the drive will fail soon. Will WD exchange out
this drive under warranty for this reason? It passes all diagnostic tests fine.
Anyone actually ever done this?

email or call WD support and explain the drive is making excessive
noise. Maybe they'd have the drive exchanged or maybe they'd make you
wait until the drive actually fails first.

Backup everything you have and just don't use that drive anymore.

I think its good to at least email/talk to WD and get a case number of some
kind, if not a total replacement. That way when the drive has a bearing
failure you have a documented history of the drive having problems. It just
seems like a good idea.

Thanks, I just got a response back from them. They didnt really answer my
question in so many words, I think it was a canned response. They didnt come
out and say "Yes, we will replace the drive for this reason" They did however
say that if the drive was still under warranty, etc. and then listed the
different RMA types. So I guess they will replace it. I just dont want to do an
advanced RMA and then have them deny it and charge my card. I will probably get
back to them to make sure.
