Hello friends,

I use XP home in my Sony notebook computer. The OS was not what came with
the notebook, but which I installed, so Sony won't help.

Well, I have been trying to use my new Philips SA1110/37 digital audio
player with my computer but Windows explorer or the 'Firmware Manager' that
came with the player do not recognize it when plugged in. My Dell desktop,
also with XP Home installed, on the other hand, recognizes the player!

Unfortunately, it is the notebook that I need to use with the player. Why
would one work but the other wouldn't, with the same OS? Any ideas? Any help
would be very much appreciated!

Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one?

What/who is the source of the CD you used to install Windows?

Thanks, Bear, for your interest. I would say this is a new problem because
the MP3 player is new and this is the first time that I was connecting it to
the notebook. I have been trying to get it to work for the past 4 days. It
works with the Desktop.

The XP Home CD is a genuine one that came with my Sony notebook, though I
'reinstalled' it to partition the hard drive. Sony's solution to all my
computer problems is to 'restore' their original configurations, but I prefer
not to since I did not want to store data and the OS in the same partition;
hence the 'reformatiing' and 'repartitioning'.

Hope the information above would help you to help me.

Thanks again, in advance.

And what has Philips Support had to say about this?

Besides using the WinXP (OEM) CD that came with the laptop, did you also
install the drivers, etc., contained on the other CD(s) that came with the
machine?

PA Bear, sorry about the delay from my end. Philips is willing to 'replace'
the piece, no other help. Replacing may not work, it would probably be square
one. Yes, I did install the drivers and many of my USB peripherals used
towork very well, until recently, I guess, as the following attests.

Well, here is the situation. Not only does the MP3 player is not readable by
any of the two USB ports in my notebook, an external floppy drive (Mitsumi)
as well as an external 'USB powered' Zip drive (Zip 250, Iomega) do not
'read', either. The floppy gets 'read' and the files are reported in Windows
explorer, but 'setup' files do not get 'executed' from floppies. Text files
is opened by notepad. The zip, on the other hand, is not readable at all; in
fact, I am unable to 'eject' the zip from the drive without using the 'pin'
method.

It looks like an OS (XP Home) problem, don't you think? Previously, I had
both the zip and floppy connected to the same USB port using a 'plug and
play' USB hub which I do not use now; using the hub doesn't help either. What
gives?

Thanks in advance.

Alvin
