Not the usual slow start.

I have been searching but have not found any answers. One of my systems now
hangs at the first screen before it even tries to start Windows XP Pro.
First I thought it was the CPU or MoBo and almost gave up but after watching
long enough it finally proceeded and loaded. Is this a sign of something
about to fail? I tried to boot to BIOS by hitting F2 but that did nothing.
Everything was fine until this morning and I have not made any changes. I
have not installed any hardware or reconfigured this System in several
months if not longer.

Any insight on what to look for would be appreciated.

TIA.
J.

The System Event log may have a clue as to what is going on. XP logs
events ( Info, Warnings & Errors ).
Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Expand the System log and check for Red/Yellow icons that denote the
warnings & errors. Clicking each will bring up a details box with a brief
description and a unique Even ID #.

There are a number of possibilities, DHCP assignment, Disk problems,
Service Start failures....

Does the problem also show up when you boot to safe mode?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

It happens way before it even begins to start. It hangs at the first screen
when it gives me the option of starting in BIOS or Network startup. I sit
there with my finger on F2 or F8 for 5 minutes before the mem test counter
starts. It's like what will happen if you try to start with now HDD
attached. In that case I would get a different error.

I see many error reports here. I am not posting from that System so I
cannot paste the reports but some are referring to CTSYN and TPkd.

The next: "The CMS Ports0 Service failed to start due to the following
error: The System cannot find the file specified."

I have searched and found both files present.

Another report states:

The SQL Server Active Directory Helper service terminated with
service-specific error 3221225572 (0xC0000064).

The next:

The DC 5900(Video) service failed to start...............
Can not find the file specified. Files are also on the System.

This just for starters. All of which I am sure is perfectly clear to
everyone in the group.

Now it wants to send an email to Microsoft which I am sure will report
right back to me. I'll start holding my breath now. :)

Seriously though, I have been searching and reading but I can see will take
some time.

Just a question, is the data on that system backed up?

I need to see copies of the Reports. Copy all the Reports into a single
word or text document. This can then be saved to floppy or similar media
and transferred to the computer you are posting from. You can delete
this part of the Report and what appears after "For more information,
see Help and Support Center" to reduce the length of your post

See if you can identify the specific steps where it stalls from the link
below:

I have everything backed up. I have a clone drive of all my systems and can
install any of them at any time.

What does that last sentence mean? Were you not able to enter the BIOS?
Did you hit F2 early enough? Perhaps you need to try another keyboard.
What kind of keyboard are you currently using?

If I keep my finger on the right key long enough I will eventually get into
BIOS or Safe Mode. It will also boot to Windows if I wait long enough. The
System is hanging at the first screen where it gives you a chance to hit any
F key you want. This is the screen that I get if I try to load with no drive
attached. I had done this once when I forgot to plug in the HDD. This just
started happening this morning. Once Windows loads everything runs fine. I
find no reason to suspect the keyboard.

Sorry for not making this clearer.
Jake.
