My brother is having problems with his PC. His floppy
drive and cd-rom drive and recently stopped recognizing
media. About a week ago it worked fine, but now when he
puts a cd in, when he clicks on the drive, it's telling
him no disc inserted and same for floppy. Windows and
BIOS recongnize the drive. I checked his data cables and
power to the drives and they're fine. So I'm not sure
what to do. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

These two components usually use the southbridge chipset. Unfortunately
we can't blame it on that or its drivers since the harddrive is working
properly. Have you tried repairing Windows? Boot from the Windows XP
CD, choose install, it will find the existing installation, then press R
to repair, and it will automatically repair itself.
