Hi,

I have got a portable hard disk..which is 40GB in size.. the problem is my
system is not detecting the device...

I have installed windows XP, with SP2.

The USB ports are working fine with PEN DRIVES n other devices..however its
not detecting this HARD DRIVE although the HARD DRIVE was/is working in other
systems...!

Plz help me out..

THANK YOU!

One possibility is that the portable drive draws more power from the
USB port than the Root Hub can provide. Most external drives have
either a stand-along power AC-DC converter or some type of auxiliary
power derived from a PS2 style connector that plugs into either the
Keyboard or Mouse PS2 socket. A USB Root Hub can only source
500mA total to all devices connected.
You can check loading ( Power/Bandwidth ) by opening the details
box for the Controller and Root Hub. The controller will show how
much bandwidth is being used and the Root Hub has a Power (TAB)
that shows the current loading.

Thank you McCarty..!
Could u plz let me know the steps for checking the power details and

Moreover, can i check the power and bandwidht details when my PC is not at

Power might be the issue, though I've also found that failure to detect
certain USB devices signals the need for an ESCD reset in the BIOS. ESCD is
usually found under 'power' settings.

Step 1 is to add a new System Environment Variable. Right Click
My Computer, Left Click Properties, Advanced (TAB). Environment
Variables ( Button ). Bottom half - Click New, name it
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value = 1
This enables Device Manager to show Plug-&-Play phantom entries.

Open Device Manager, Click (open) Universal Serial Bus Controllers
category. Check for any "Unknown Device" entries. If found Right
Click each one and choose Uninstall.

Then open each USB Root Hub, Click Power (TAB). It will show
you the current draw on the Hub.

Bandwidth is found by opening each ____ Host Controller. The details
box will have an Advanced (TAB), clicking it will display bandwidth
used.

Thanks McCarty..u rock..!

What Vendor & Model drive is it ? - If it is a USB 2.0 compliant device
it doesn't matter which socket ( USB port ) you plug it into. If however
it's a USB-1(.1) device then plugging into a different socket will assign it
to a different USB Controller/Root Hub.

You don't have the provision to increase the power level, only to move
the device to a Controller/Hub that is capable of supplying it's needs.

How many USB peripherals do you have connected to your PC ?

The manufacture is ZIPPYS, its a USB 2.0 compliant and was working fine in my
friends Comp..
I dont have any other USB devices connected to my PC.. Its the only USB
device i'm trying to connect to..!

One more piece of information. Open Device Manager, USB category
and post back the description of any "Enhanced" controller(s). Such as
"Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Controller..."

Thanks for ur Response...!!
But i dont find any description saying " Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced
Controller..." or anything like tht..!

I would like to give a brief history of my PC which i feel would assist u in
helping me.

My PC is a year old..n last week i found tht it has been affected by
virus..after a virus scan, i found tht is has affected few dll files in
system32..n automatically my antivirus software removed(deleted) few
important dll files..consequently i...
1.Coud not change the system time..(it said the file ur tryin gto access is
removed or moved into different location)
2.Could not open the Regedit...(it said the file you are tryin gto access is
removed or moved into different location)
3..
n things like tht..
So i thought i should re-install the OS.. But i did not re-install a fresh
copy..instead i used the UPGRADE option in it..!
After doing so everything seemed fine....i could change time..open
regedit..n all looked going well...!
And for the information... before Upgrading, i have seen the description
something like "Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Controller..." under
Enhanced Controllers..!
But Now ITS MISSING..!

Whats its showing now is..
I have an option "SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS" in DEVICE MANAGER..
under this i have..
Thats it..!
Before i had something as you have mentioned.. like.. "Intel(R) ICH8 Family
USB2 Enhanced Controller...". with port number n all..!

please let me know how to get back to my old state.. i mean..how can i make
the description appearring in there..?.. what does it mean in my case.. why
is it not showing now?
Hope this would assit u in helping me..!
Thank you..!
