Not Optimum Mode - Optimum mode 1240 x 1040 60hz

Charles W Davis

Computer Club member's computer with Windows XP Home. Service Pack 3.

No matter what, the system boots in safe mode. Shortly a small windows opens
that reads: "Not Optimum Mode - Optimum mode 1240 x 1040 60hz" with a
question mark (?) in the middle.

Soon, the screen turns black and the small window moves around as if a
screen saver. No action will have any effect. Once, the desktop appeared
again for about 5 seconds.

I have managed to run chkdsk /f with no errors.

Malware or hardware or ?

The monitor display is asking if you want to change to that resolution.
You probably need to press a button on the side of the monitor to
answer "yes". There should be a prompt that explains which buttons do what.

Once in Safe Mode, install/reinstall the proper drivers for the graphics
card, and the computer might boot properly.

I think you computer display resolution has not been properly set.Boot
to safemode then adjust the resolution accordingly.

Elmo,

Thank you so much! With pressing a button on my monitor causing not
resolution change, I was able to do a system restore to November 27, which
was a couple of days before the problems started. Why they wait so long
before contacting our Computer Club, I have no idea.

The system is now up and running. I have been able to uninstall Norton and
the Symantec products using the Norton Removal tool. The McAfee removal tool
also reported a flock of stuff removed.

I have installed the Free AVG 8.0 Anti-virus/Anti-spyware with updates. It
still complained of another anti-spyware program in existence, but was
unable to locate any. So proceeded anyway.

Replaced an old version of Adobe Reader with Reader 9.0

The system was already running SP3. Microsoft Update provided 11 more
updates.

I'll be able to return another success... Without reinstalling the OS!

The member will now make a $20 donation to the club. I am a 78 year old
volunteer and get a lot of satisfaction helping these folks.

You mean that the system always boots into safe mode? You need to check
that the safeboot setting in boot.ini has not been enabled.

To do this, go to Start/Run
Then enter msconfig
Select the tab for Boot.ini
You will see a box labelled Safeboot

I think you have Graphics card which is not supported by your
monitor.uninstall the graphics physically. Then connect the monitor to
the integrated display port which is the blue. This should help.

On investigation, the PCI graphics card was bad. One of the other house call
volunteers had a used one that did the job and all is well.

Thanks to everyone.
