Not installing Updates.

I have Windows Vista and just recently, when I go to turn it off, it will get
all the way to 'logging off' and stay that way until I press the button to
turn off the computer. When I go to turn it back on, I have to start windows
normally, and everything works fine, except that Windows will not get the
automatic updates that it is set up to do. When I click on the icon for
Updates, or even go to the website to get the updates that way, nothing
happens. The window states that the updates are downloading, but that is all
it does and never downloads. I have done all the troubleshooting that I was
advised to do, with no success. The computer needs to shut down completely,
but it won't. And it won't download any updates. Any suggestions as to what
I might be doing wrong? Or is Windows Vista just glitchy? I can still get
online and do the normal things, but I do need to update.

Sounds like a corruption. System Restore to a time when it did shut down OK
then do Updates.
