Not getting IP address from DHCP

Dan

I have XP on Compaq pc trying to connect with DHCP to SBS2000 server.
Network connection - TCP/IP is set to Obtain an IP address automatically, as
is DNS. Neither the Wired NIC or Wireless card obtains the correct address.

Right now I am testing with D-Link DWL-G630 which works correctly in my
other laptop. When plugged into this laptop I get an IP address of
169.254.65.92. which says "Automatic Private Address".

How do I correct this?

from a DOS (Command Prompt) ipconfig /release then (Command Prompt)
ipconfig /renew it should then grab a DHCP.

Tried that.. Did not work.

On ipconfig /release
I get
Connection-specific DNS Suffix. :
Autoconfiguration IP Address... : 169.254.169.92
Subnet Mask ........................... : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway.........................:

Try to repair from Net. Connections and it fails also.

The autoconfiguration has me confused. It's like it can't get a DHCP address
so it pulls an "Automatic private IP address" from the Alternate
Configuration in the TCP/IP settings.

Your using a router and the lap top is wireless/wired and you cannot
get a valid address. Did you try opening the D-Link control window and
refreshing the connection so it can use the proper router. Sometimes
when I log in at other locations I get a window that gives me the
Private DNS assigned by the device. Which it should btw. But there may
be other services listed and you have to be using the correct one. You
then click the one you are using in the machine. In my case its a
Linksys and it shows up as such.
After I refresh the device list and then click on the connect box the
dns is found and the laptop is off and running.

Open your Network connections, modify the Local Area
connection TCP/IP Properties. Enter an address from your
routers range 192.168.x.x, SubNet mask 255.255.255.0
Then enter the DNS server and gateway as your router's address.
DHCP is handy in corporate environments, but for home
networks it's just easier to assign fixed values.
