Hello,

I just installed a second GB of memory. My hard disk is 160GB and 25% full.
I'm using about 800MB of memory. When I try to Hibernate, I get the error
message "Not enough system resources". Has anyone seen this?

Thank you,
Don

The most obvious answer is that you have less than 2GB free on your system
partition. When you put the system into hibernation, it creates a file
(hiberfil.sys) on the system partition equivalent in size to the amount of
installed RAM. If you do not have enough free space, the file cannot be
created, ergo "not enough system resources".

Once you've freed up at least 2GB on the system partition the hiberfil.sys
can be created and you will be able to successfully hibernate the system.

If that isn't the problem and you have enough space, then please, post back.

25% of 160GB is 40GB. That leaves 120GB free.

Yes, it's possible that all of his 160GB isn't in a single
partition. But it certainly doesn't sound like it from the way he
describes his problem.

Explain, using real mathematical terms, how the OP has a 160gig drive, that
is 25% full, yet (as you figure) has less than 2gigs of space left on it? It
seems that he has a total of 1gig+ of RAM, stated that 800megs is being
used, but gets the message about shortage of resource (note, not a "disk
space low" message!!). Something is eating up his resources (ergo MEMORY,
not disk space). I ask this, because you make a claim, without the OP having
given what the size of his system partition is, yet he states the 25%
figure.

Don, do you have your hard drive partitioned? Also, open Task Manager, and
see what is eating those resources under the processes tab. When you say 25%
of your drive is full, does that figure come from the drive being used as a
whole drive, or is that coming from system partition (of among possibly
other partitions you have)? Please elaborate.

Hi,

Thank you for your response.

I have 118GB free on my C: drive. I've been hibernating okay until I put
the second GB of memory in this weekend.

Thank you,
Don

Hi Tom,

My hard drive is not partitioned. The 160GB is the C: drive. I looked in
Explorer and it showed the C: drive has 118GB free. I have 2GB of memory.
My paging file size is 3GB .

I quit all applications and I still get the error message when I hibernate.
This is really wierd.

Thank you,
Don

This is better (and I read your post to me). The memory you installed, is it
the exact same kind of memory as the original? XP doesn't tolerate different
type of module brands, and may complain like what you see. Does your system
recognize the total of thw two modules (2gigs)?

Got a maz size set for your page file? If so, remove it.

You haven't indicated what type of machine this is, but usually when you
change your RAM size, you need to change the size of the file that is used
to store the contents of RAM when the machine goes into hibernate mode.
Consult your system reference and look for the hibernation procedure. It
usually involves deleting the existing hibernation file and using a special
utility to create a new one.

Turning it off will result in removing it :-).

Sorry, Ken, you're right, I missed the drive capacity. That's what comes of
attempting to be clever at gone 1 in the morning!

OK, not a problem.
