not able to send or receive emails in Windows Mail

All of a sudden I am unable to send or receive emails using Windows Mail
which I have been using for years. The error message is "Socket Error 10061
and Error #0x800CCC0E. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

We need the complete error message, copy and paste it to your reply.
 
There were two error messages: 1= Account: 'mail.hughes.net', Server:
'mail.hughes.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '.', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

2=The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.gmail.com', Server:
'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I can tell you what's wrong in gmail :--
Change port # to 995 , not 110
Put a checkmark on " This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
Perhaps, same could be applied to hughes.net, but don't hold me on that.

now" Account: 'pop.gmail.com', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR not supported c1pf68450ana.17', Port: 995,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18".
 
On the next test I can send emails but still cannot receive emails from gmail
but I have now got a new error message" Account: 'pop.gmail.com', Server:
'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR not supported
b37pf2748533ana.64', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC18

Did you enable POP on the gmail site?

Check all your settings against those provided here:

Thanks, you have been very patient. I now have the gmail working fine but
the Hughesmail has stopped and I am getting the following message: Account:
'mail.hughes.net', Server: 'mail.hughes.net', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '.', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

I cannot find anything on the Hughes website to help me but if you have any
ideas, they would be appreciated.
 
Port should be 465 for Gmail, not 995.
