Norton Utilities in XP

Richard

I have Norton Utilities 2003 and it worked fine in Windows
98. I can not get the utilities to install in XP. The
antivirus software will install, just not utilities. It
hangs up on initializing everytime. I have checked
Symantec without finding any help. This is not the only
software I have had this problem with. I have a Ford
Repair Manual on CD that worked fine on 98 and on XP, it
just hangs up after you start the setup. I feel this is an
XP problem, maybe a setting or something. I have installed
xp SP2 today, and it did not help.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Richard

If your version of norton utilities is designed for XP, boot into "safe"
mode and install it from there.I've had to do this with more than one program
and afterwards it works just fine.

Do you have any other virus program or disk maintenance programs
installed? If so remove them.

There are several versions of Utilities on the cd. You have to pick the one
for Windows XP and it will install. But IMO, you should skip installing the
Utilities for XP. They really cause more problems than they solve. XP has all
the utilities you need for XP and they're much better integrated into XP. I
uninstalled everything but the anti virus.

In your opinion Norton Util 2003 causes trouble.
One the other side of the coin... they work great for
me in Windows XP both pre, and post, SP2.

Thanks, Safe mode worked for my repair cd. However, I
tried it with System works and it said it could not find
windows installer and that being in safe mode is one thing
that causes that. Any ideas? Is it possible that this
windows installer is not working properly on my machine?
Can I reinstall it without reinstalling XP?

Thanks,

I wonder what you all are talking about. there is no norton utilities 2003,
just 2002 and they definitely suck. They managed to crash my WinXP sp2 3
times since the installation of sp2 (i.e. in the last 2-3 weeks). I'd
uninstall them if I were not so lazy. cause Mary above was right - winXP has
everything you need built inside. norton is just trying to rip off customers
by spreading fear and abusing their ignorance. same is true for symantec and
several other companies that produce useless system suites

I have had some problems installing a few programs under XP, and Norton
System Works was one of them.

Try copying the whole CD to a newly-created dummy directory. Turn off all
other user programs, including the virus scanner. Unplug all USB and
firewire devices (except, maybe the printer). Now try the install from the
files on the hard drive.
