norton told me to turn off sys restore, but now i need to restore

Norton Antivirus; the bought program that came with this
Dell, told me to turn off my system restore a while ago
in order that the file containing the Trojan virus that
Norton found isn't restored in a system restore. Things
have gone awry, and i have run all sorts of scans and
antivirus software through my machine and so i got sick
of it, and i want to do system restore; i've got
everything on my computer saved so it shouldn't harm too
much if i do. My question is; is it still possible?
Should i try to pull it off in the old Win98 fashion -
boot into dos, and use command prompt? Can I do
that? ...i need help... i've got serious problems with my
pc - internet explorer constantly has it's home page
changed and search pages and advertisement web sites and
porn web sites fly up on my computer about every five
minutes, even if there are absolutely no applications
running....i've looked through the registry, and i see
the suspicious web site names and i change them, but they
are constantly changing back. I have done all the
instructions Norton has directed. Need i switch to Mac?

Hi,

If you turned off System Restore, then there are no restore points to go
back to. There is no command prompt restore like the registry restore from
Win98. Check your Dell system's documentation for the proper steps to
reinstall the system.

As Rick says - you turned off System Restore, so there is nothing to go
back to. That was intended by Norton as a means of removing restore
points that contained the virus. They could do no harm unless you
restored to the point concerned, and it is better instead to wait till a
new clean point has been made, and then run Disk Cleanup, taking its
'More Option' to delete all but the last restore point
