To truly uninstall the POS called Norton, I'm afraid you'll have to
reinstall XP fresh. AVG is good but I prefer AVAST, http://www.avast.com/

Alias

To remove Norton's stuff, first use the "Add/Remove" option in the Control
Panel then search your Program Files for leftover Files/Folders and delete
them then do the same in your Registry.

Suggestion: When installing AVG, choose the "custom installation" and then when given the
installations options, un-check the email scanning option. Scanning incoming email and outgoing
email provides no extra protections and slows the email program down. In fact, a lot of experts
believe that scanning incoming and outgoing mail causes email file corruption. Of course you can
disable the email scanning after you install AVG, but then it nags you to turn in on again.

Bewteen the 2, Norton or AVG, In experience, having had Norton and McAFee,
AVG is the clear winner, its light on your computer resources, not a hog, does
not rule over other programs or create problems when downloading , and does
what a virus program is suppose to do, protect you. Make sure all AVG
protection is running including e-mail, I have had AVG catch several times
rogue emails coming in, it sent them off to the virus vault. Using AVG since
1998, there has never been one problem.

It's called a signature. They're common among usenet folks.

I THINK his particular quote is a paraphrase of Ben Franklin. Though
the exact quote is

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security,
deserve neither liberty or security"
