Norton Live Update and XP

I am aware of two other computers besides my own that have Norton AV 2003
or 2004 in them and they will not update virus definitions automatically.
Zone Alarm catches it on mine. On one of the others Norton will pop up a
window telling you the virus definitions are out of date after a reboot.
I've been to the Symantec site and their cure doesn't work. Their "fix"
is to download the latest definitions in the "intelligent updater" file,
go to Safe Mode, delete everything in the Virus Definitions folder, and
then apply the intelligent updater. No help... still doesn't work.
Has anyone else run into this and if so, did you find a cure for it? I
realize this is off topic in this group, but Symantec doesn't seem to
have an answer... that I can find anyway.
And yes... I DO have automatic live update turned ON.... :)

Yes, it's a Windows XP problem with Scheduler that prevents Net
Detect from running properly. Call Microsoft Tech Support and
request HotFix #812400.

This is from Symantec and it works. I need to do it every few months.

"Fix a damaged reference to NIS or NAV in the Windows Task Scheduler
Delete and recreate the NetDetect Task. This will fix the problem if it was
caused by a damaged reference in the Task Scheduler.

To remove the scheduled task:
Start Norton AntiVirus
Click Options. If a submenu appears, click Norton AntiVirus
Click LiveUpdate (Norton AntiVirus)
Uncheck "Enable Automatic LiveUpdate" (Norton AntiVirus)
Click OK.
Close your Symantec program.

Click Start, point to Programs (All Programs in Windows XP), point to
Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
Look for a scheduled task named "NDetect.exe" or "Symantec NetDetect."
Select the scheduled task and press Delete.

To recreate the scheduled task:
Restart the computer. If you are using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, then you must
log in as the default Administrator account.

Start Norton AntiVirus
Click Options.
Click LiveUpdate (Norton AntiVirus) or the General tab (Norton Internet
Security).
Check "Enable Automatic LiveUpdate" (Norton AntiVirus)
Click OK.
Check "Enable Automatic LiveUpdate (recommended)." If using Norton
AntiVirus, also check "Notify me when updates are available."
Close your Symantec program.

Restart the computer. At this point, open your Web browser and log on to the
Internet. If this fixed the problem, and updates are available, LiveUpdate
should run within several minutes."

That seems to ring a bell from way back. Anyways, I did it and it worked!
I'll not lose the notes on this one this time.
Thank you very much!
