Norton Go-Back and WinXp System Restore

Since WinXp came with system restore preinstalled,
is it necessary to install norton goback?

I understand that both utilities perform same function.

As I understand it, Go-Back can completely restore your hard drive(s) to a
previous date, meaning any new files you've created since that date will
disappear, and any files that have changed will revert (for example you'll
lose any new emails since that date), as if you've reformatted and restored
from a backup. System Restore will restore your system files without
affecting any of your data files.

Yes but with a few differences.
Symantec enhanced GoBack with plenty of new features, including the
ability to revert to old versions of individual files -- rather than
what System Restore does, which is restore the entire Windows operating
system to its state before a change was made. This once again makes
GoBack a vital utility for all PC users
This is different from the System Restore feature in Windows XP, which
restores most system files but leaves your personal files alone.
GoBack's latest version can restore as much as 8GB of data.

Will "System Restore" afford the opportunity to get back a previous
generation of a given data file?

Thank.

I work on a lot of computers. I have seen two with Goback installed that
needed a clean install (format hard drive) to fix a corrupted file problem
with goback. I have never had to do a clean install because of a system
restore problem. I was able to install the hard drive in another computer
and copy off important data but I would never install Goback after seeing
these two computers.

Hello, Not necessary "not needed but useful". Can be used with or without
System Restore. System Restore is used for system files.
GoBack can restore "C" or a individual file.
Can be used, with some ease, before Windows starts. Files can be reviewed
before any changes are made. Needs about 10% of the drive to function well.
Can be a small problem on slow systems due to the need to copy changes.
Person should read the user notes.
Should not be used instead of a full backup. This is a complement. Useful
during a bad program install, a virus attack or to retrive a deleted file. As
with all mainstream programs there are good and not so good parts.
Take Care.

Wrong. GoBack has many more features. Restore only restores system
operating files. GoBack restores everything back to a previous condition.
It also has the capability to find a previous version of a file (within its
memory). You can then overwrite the current file with it or restore it to a
different folder or rename it slightly so you can have both the current and
the previous version for comparison.

GoBack is my first line of recovery from a problem. If that doesn't solve
it I have a 200GB USB external drive where I keep 3 images of my hard drive
using Drive Image 7.0.

When I tried to install it once on a clean XP SP2 system, it slowed down my
system to a crawl and then was almost impossible to uninstall. I'll never
try it again.

One major advantage of GOBACK is that you can restore to the previous state
before booting into the windows. If you cannot boot the windows, you cannot
use system restore - that simple. For some reasons my system restore doesn't
function properly all the time, so I would end up reinstalling my windows
after trojan attack lately, but I have GoBack - no problems - 10 minutes and
no problem!
I hope it will help.

P.S. It is true - GoBack requires fast system, on the slow one it is slowing
down everything. I think, anything faster than 1.6 Ghz would be working great
(my slow one has 600 Mhz Celeron).

I'd avoid norton goback.
