Norton Futility

Hi. I appear to have a virus and Norton Utilities can't deal with it.
Outlook Express e-mail is not coming in (I checked the server, and
they're fine) and I'm unable to open Word documents or shut down the
computer without hitting the power button.

The computer is a Compaq presario on Windown XP that came with a trial
run of Norton 2005.

When I try to get Norton to scan the computer for viruses, nothing
happens. It won't scan.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Has the trial version expired ? - if so, then it may still scan - but the
definitions will not be up to date so coverage will be lacking. If you
can use the web, go to Trend Micro's home page and run their on
line scan. Might also want to run their separate Spyware scanner.
If you haven't decided on a long term solution ( I recommend eTrust
from Computer Associates) download either AVG or Avast which
are both free, until you have a permanent choice.

If you get everything back to normal, think twice about renewing your Norton
2005 subscription. With 2006 I get updates daily, with 2005 on another PC
updates are weekly.

Thanks. The trial hasn't expired yet, and I got the latest updates
(internet still working) before trying to run the scan.

I will attempt to use another virus checker.

Install other free antivirus apps in safe mode. Run. Then boot to
regualar mode. Update. Run again.

I thought "Norton Utilities" *was* a virus ???

this is a symptom of having a spyware app on the system - it's
interferring w/ norton running.

get and run both AdAware and SpyBot. Get the CWShredder too, just in
case. All are free.

You may need to run these multiple times, after reboots, to be sure
everything is gone. CoolWebSearch is especially hard to get rid of.
Running from Safe Mode may also be necessary.

I'd never install nortons utilties to run 24/7.

But, their anti-virus alone keeps many AOL users from contracting the
latest trojans/viruses.
