Norton Disc Doctor Problem

Please Help
NDD detected problems with 'FILE STRUCTURE STATUS' which
were correctable. when i then ticked the 'fix errors'
checkbox a message came up saying 'The operating system
or another process currenty has exclusive access to this
drive or some of its files. Norton Disc Doctor cannot
repair under these conditions'
what does that mean?
If i schedule a norton repair on reboot it starts up with
Windows Scandisc then the same norton message appears.
How can i get NDD to repair problem without it being
prevented from doing so?

A general feature of XP is that you can not fix a disk if it is being used.
Further, the parition where XP itself is located is always being used, when
XP is running. So, the best that you can do is request a repair during a
reboot.

Personally I have found little advantage to DiskDoctor over CHKDSK, since I
migrated to XP. In fact, I have found instances where DsikDoctor said there
was a problem, but there was not, as evidenced by reunning DiskDoctor a
second time without rebooting.

The best check+fix you can do is to run CHKDSK C: /R from a command prompt.
If the problem disk is not C:, then type the appropriate letter. Accept the
offer to fix upon rebooting, then reboot. This may take a long while, since
it does a lot more than the standard CHKDSK (i.e., /F option).

True. Run online, DiskDoctor will continually find a problem with the
Security Descriptors, that the result of the Usn Journal verification
process couldn't be written to disk (since it was locked). Running DD
offline, as suggested (which is CHKDSK anyway), allows that to happen. This
started happening, I think, when the Usn Journal was created when I was
checking out the XP's indexing feature temporarily.

FWIW, I do like to run CHKDSK /f every so often, even if there have been no
hard shutdowns, as it cleans up some superfluous stuff.
