Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect: too slow

Enabling my Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect at startup takes between 4 and 5
minutes. Is this delay normal or do I have a problem ?
Any help ?
Thanks

4 to 5 minutes, how does that compare to a normal boot before
NAV was installed ? On average boot times on XP are about a
minute. But that varies widely based on what software you have
on the PC. NAV uses a pretty high number of services that will
start at boot. Some of those have dependencies. You may have
a case of a Service time out. When services start or try to they
will wait for a certain length of time before proceeding. I would go
to Event Viewer and check both the System and Application logs.
Look for any red icons that denote errors. As always, be sure to
check for Malware as this can also bog down a boot cycle. You
can use MSConfig.Exe, Startup (TAB) to check and see what &
how many Startups your PC is running.

Not really normal even for NAV. On the other hand, how much ram do you
have and how much free space on c:?

No. I don't think your 4-5 minute boot time is normal.

I run Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect at startup and my boot takes about 70 seconds to completely
load and be ready for business. Have about 54 GB free on "C" IDE (7200 RPM) drive and one
gigabyte of RAM. Boot time is decent--I think--considering that my three-year old CPU is only
a 1.6 GHz P4.

You do have a problem. Your 4-5 minute startup delay is definitely not normal. Perhaps you
need to run msconfig and examine all the components comprising your startup time.

My entire boot--including Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect--takes 82 seconds, which is good in
my view since my three-year old CPU is only 1.6 GHz. I do have one gig of RAM and a solid
7200 RPM IDE hard drive.
