Normal.dotm

I am trying to have a single interline and the spacing option "don't add
space between paragraphs of same style" set as my default options for new
documents. Clicking the default button doesn't work, it just keeps asking if
you want to save the changes to doc1.

I've been renaming Normal to have Word recreate it again but to no avail.
When I open a new document , Doc1, its paragraphs settings are back to
multiple interline and the "don't add space between..." option checked off.

What's more when I click the Office button then New, in the last used
templates pane, the list is showing only NormalEmail, not the Normal. How do
I get it back?

Thank you for any help.

Open the normal.dotm template as a document. For example, search for
"normal.dot" in Windows (be sure to search hidden files and folders),
right-click the icon and choose Open from the context menu. Then display the
Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S), right-click Normal and click Modify. Make
the desired changes, via the Format button (Format, Font for font
properties and Format, Paragraph for paragraph properties). When you are
done, save and close normal.dotm.

Thank you Stefan,

A couple of hours after posting I decided to insist and finally found the
way how to fix it. What a relief. I did exactly what you have said today.
However in the Last Used Templates Pane, besides NormalEmail, there used to
be listed also Normal which I fear I have (some moron I am) mistakenly
deleted. Can you please tell me how to get it back ?

Are you saying that there is no icon for "Blank document" (this corresponds
to the Normal template)?

Yes, I meant that.

There's only the NormalEmail icon for "Blank Document" displayed. As I
earlier said I must have inadvertently deleted the Normal icon. Any chance of
restoring it ?

Sorry, I've never seen this, so I'm not sure what could be causing it. :-(

The following KB article was the closest one I could find, but note that it
describes the *opposite* problem, that templates other than the Normal one
are missing:

Office templates are missing from the New Office Document dialog box in
Office
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825935/en-us

It might be very well worth trying the fix, though.

It generally helps to be precise in describing symptoms - although I do
accept that you may be translating from another language and it isn't always
easy.

In Word 2007 when you click on the Office button and select New, you see a
New Document Dialog. By default "Blank and recent" is selected from the
navigation list on the left and the main body of the dialog shows "Blank and
recent" at the top followed by "Recently Used Templates". Depending on your
recent activity Normal.dotm and/or NormalEmail.dotm may appear under the
recently used section - their presence or absence is indicative only of
recent activity, not of availability. I admit I don't know what can or
should appear at the top under "Blank and recent" but my system shows "Blank
document" and "New blog post", neither specifying the template name. As far
as I know Normal and NormalEmail use the same icon.

All in all, I'm not sure what problem, if any, you actually have. Could you
describe your symptoms precisely and tell me what you are unable to do.

Both don't fit to the case. Thanks a lot.

Hi Tony,

Actually I am able to do anything. There are no symptoms whatsoever to be
described. My Office Ultimate applications are working like a charm and the
issue I had with Normal template has been fixed. This must have slipped to
your sight in previous posts.

In the recent past when clicking the Office button in Word then New I used
to see in the "Recently Used Templates" section both of them. Now Normal icon
is no longer there. I know they have the same icon.

Today I have learnt from you that their presence or absence is indicative
only of recent activity, not of availability. Then can you explain to me why
NormalEmail which I have never used is always there and the much used
Normal.dotm is not?
Also do you know why I cannot find, with show hidden file or folders
enabled, Normal.dotm via desktop search?

As for what should appear at the top under "Blank and Recent" mine like
yours, show "Blank Document" and "New Blog Post".

Good questions. I have never fully understood Microsoft's definition of
'Recent', or where the information comes from - my list includes two
documents as well as templates. Neither Normal nor NormalEmail seem to be
added to the list unless they are explicitly used - for example via the old
dialog which you get if you select "My templates" from the list on the left
(the dialog shows "Blank Document" for Normal.dotm).

I rarely use search as I find it slow and unreliable. There is an outside
chance you don't actually have a normal.dotm - if so, one will be created
when you start Word but it will only be saved if you have made a change to
it - it should be in the same location as NormalEmail.

Thank you Tony,

You too. Lino from Milan.
