Normal.dot Hangup

T

TonySper

Using word 2003. Have got hung up with normal.dot three times. It will
not let me save a file as it says that normal.dot is being used by
another program. Have4 tried to delete the normal.dot file but again
it says it is being used by Microsoft word. Microsoft word is not
running and can't find out what is happening. If I shut the computer
down and restart windows I can go to the template folder and delete
the normal.dot file. The problem is that a couple of days later the
same problem happens. Any ideas??

Are you specifically changing Normal.dot and trying to save it?

If so then if you are using Norton AV go to Norton Options and in the
Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

If you aren't modifying Normal.dot then take a look at this article:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx

Note that the "in use" message may still be caused by Norton but you
should investigate the reason why your Normal.dot is being modified.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

This appears to be a duplicate of a post from the 15th? Have you read the

Graham,
Thanks for the info. I did send it out then but for some reason it
does not show on my listing. I was wondering what happened to it.
Would you mind sending the reply to me as I do not have it??
Thanks

Beth,
Thanks for the very good link. I will see if this will cure the
problem. I have not had the problem in a while but never know when it
will pop up.

The reply - which is still in the archive - reads

If you still have Outlook open when you close Word, the normal.dot file will
probably remain locked until you close Outlook.

Note that you cannot save a file as normal.dot and expect it to work
properly. Only Word can create normal.dot. You can, however, edit the file
Word creates.

Graham,
Thanks for the email. Funny thing, I did a find search in the archives
and it found my subject as well as your reply but it is not listed in
my listing. I think your reply about Outlook is my problem as the last
time it hung up I did a ctrl+alt+del and looked at the Task Manager
and I did see outlook running. I never gave it a thought that that was
my problem.
Thanks

But was Winword still running because of Outlook?

No. When I did the ctrl+alt+del WinWord was not running, and the only
way I saw Outlook running was by looking at the task manager. It
appears that Outlook never got released and it was not on the task
bar. Will have to look more close when it happens again.
