normal document template saved

I am using Office 2002, when i open an email attachment from someone using
Word 2000 and make changes and save them, i then get a message saying "Word
automatically saved changes to the normal document template. Do you want to
load it?" Why is this happening?

Two issues here aren't helping:

1. Don't open attachments from e-mail. Save them to the hard drive and open
them from there.
2. Word should not be allowed to make changes to normal.dot without your
permission - set tools > options > save > prompt to save normal.dot. If you
get a prompt and you are unsure whether you should save the changes, answer
no!

This didn't help. i tested it after making the change to options. I did not
get a resonse to save changes to the normal template, but i got a Microsoft
error box and said word recovered my document. Then the same box as before
popped up.
