I think Frank wants to save time changing attributes on lots of files
at once.

Not you - I missed "the files' parent folder" - clicking on each file
takes time, clearing the bit from the parent folder, which is what you
said and I missed, is a one-shot operation (which takes time to
execute, but that's not the point).
