Non Windows App internet access

Yesterday my non windows newsreader and chat program stopped accessing the
internet (one said no connection, the other error 10061 server refused
connection). Have XP SP2 home d-link connected to 2-way sattelite. All other
windows internet connections fine (IE, Media player streaming, etc.,.). It
happened from one day to the next. I even went back a couple days in the
restore point option, and it made no difference. Windows firewall is off.

It's hard to say without knowing *which* newsreader you're using but if all
other internet programs function you might uninstall, reboot then reinstall
the program.

The newsreader is Forte' Agent, and all other aspects of it work, except
connecting to the net it goes through several attempts then timmes out. same
with other non windows applications. the connection I have is an always on
sattelite connection, and as noted all integrated windows applications seem
to connect fine.

It could be you have high latency on your network and the session simply
times out. Contact Forte' and see how you can change "Timeout" settings to
the following.

GetHostByNameTimeout=1000
ConnectTimeout=1000
ResponseTimeout=1000
PostResponseTimeout=1000
QuitResponseTimeout=1000
SendTimeout=2000
PostTimeout=2000
SplashTime=2
SMTPSessionTimeout=1000

To check latency ping a number of sites to get an average or download
Dr.Ping from http://www.dslreports.com/tools . Ping times in ms and
anything greater than 200 might be causing problems. You might also run the
"Tweak Test" found under "Java Tools" (and which requires java to be
installed.)
