Noisy fans

I'm having trouble with noisy fans. Part of the problem is that I do not
know which fan is making the noise. I have changed both CPU-fan (to a Spire
Whisper Rock IV) and the PSU, and disconnected the chassis fan. But the
noise is as before! When I turn the PC on there is a loud humming noise
which makes the whole chassis resonate. After a while this disappears, and
the sound level is lower, but still too high. What else can I do?

Tried the northbridge fan? They can whine a bit sometimes.
Check to see if your case has a fan burried in the front of the faisure.

Do you have a CD in the CD drive?

Also, how old is your hard drive? Could this be the problem?

Bought it 2003-08-20, it's a Maxtor Diamond Plus 80 GB. Possibly this is the
problem, I will have to disconnect it and start the system from a floppy.

It couldn't hurt to try! At least then you could either rule it out or
decide on a new one. They appear to be rather cheap these days.

OK, found the culprit: the &#%## graphics card! (Abit Siluro GF4 MX-8X). Is
this a common problem with graphics cards? I will have to get another that
is quiet!

(The motherboard does not have a fan on the north bridge).

You could always run it with the case open ghetto style and poke your
head around as it is starting up.

To locate the culprit, carefully depress the center of the fan with a pencil
head. Should the noise disappear, the fan id bad.

Dismount the fan. On the internal side, there's a small round label masking
the bearing.
Carefully remove it _with its glue remaining on the label_

Put a small drop of teflon-charged oil into the bearing with the help of a
needle.
WD40 isn't good because dry. 3-in-one is fine. Don't put too much oil
otherwise you'll not be able to glue again the label and the oil in excess
will collect dirt making things worse than they were within a short while.

Time to time, I applied this procedure on an old fan (not available
anylonger). Repairs last around one year before needing to be redone.

yep, i was just going to say check the video card. those tiny little 40mm
fans can really be annoying. you MIGHT be able to find a card with a less
annoying fan but i wouldn't count on it. the good news is since it's only a
gf4mx you can get a better card that's fanless. many of the ati 9600 cards
especially the ones by sapphire or many of the nvidia 5600xt cards and i
know at least XFX makes a 5700le that's passively cooled.

Yep, got a new card without fan (ATI Radeon 9600). At last silence... well
more silence than before anyway.

Try to lube the fan with some oil.
