Socket 478 Fan

I have an old Pentium 4 2.4G BG Socket 478 CPU that has a cooling fan that's
quite noisy. I want to use this unit as a PVR but the noise levels are just
too high. It has the standard Intel boxed heatsink, fan arrangement. Can
just the fan be replaced or am I looking at both fan and heatsink? I would
rather not mess with the heatsink and just try to replace the fan.

Any recommendations on replacements?

Thanks!

1. Measure the fan width x width x height normally centimetres the do an
ebay search for a new one.

2. Remove the label in centre of fan (if has one) to reveal the bearing and
drip a small drop of sewing machine oil onto it. Leave for an hour to soak
through then run up.

Not really. Best option is to replace the heatsink as well.
Put a Typhoon on it, with a low RPM 120mm fan.

Replacing the stock Intel Pentium 4 fan by itself is not easy but
it can be done. It also means buying a replacement Heatsink/Fan from
the Intel Shop. But if this is the situation, then one might as well
replace the whole assembly. Easy to do. Remember not to touch the
heat transfer pad on the bottom of the heatsink but make sure to
clean off the old gunk from the heat slug on the top of the CPU.
