Heatsink for old motherboard

Hi,

I recently got myself an old computer containing a ABit VT6X4
motherboard. I'd like to replace the CPU-fan by a noise free heatsink,
but I don't know if this is possible! So does anyknow which heatsink
will fit on its cpu socket?

BTW, cpu is an Intel Pentium ||| 667 Mhz processor.

Thanks in advance.

I assume it's a socket 370

just look at the heat sink specs...that will tell you which sockets they
will work on

I do not have tech specs of this motherboard, but I'm sure it's a
Abit VT6X4.
I googled a little and found that is slot 1, see
http://www.motherboard.cz/abit.htm

Couldn't find a fanless heatsink though... does they exist and are
they (still) being sold?

The slot 1 cpu is a different story...some of them have heatsink assemblies
that are
not designed to be removed...while some merely attach with two clips.

If your cpu heatsink has the two clips on it...
I do have a fanless heatsink here I could send to you (n/c) if you are in
the USA

it's about 3" x 6" and about an inch thick

You can get the other type off, but it's an order of
magnitude more difficult. After the pastic case halves pop
apart, there are cantilever springs inside that can be
pushed, then slid- and sometimes a small tab on each hole
needs bent away a little bit. I might be thinking P2
instead of P3 though.

You HAVE to use a fan with that CPU or it will overheat.

Not exactly, they do run hot enough that one can't ignore
airflow, but the sink itself can be the long-tined passive
type with a nearby fan, like on the bottom of the PSU or on
the rear case wall, plus a plastic duct extending from the
fan down around the 'sink, as some OEMs used to use.

Socket 370 P3 on the other hand, very easy to passively cool
in the lower speeds around ~600-800MHz, especially so if
undervolted. They make more modern C3/C7 CPUs almost
pointless in some uses.

I happen to live in Holland... Thanks for the offer anyway mate.

Oh well...it would not have worked then...as my heat sink is in inches
and you'd need one in centimenters <G>
