Greetings,

I hope someone might be able to help me with this. My PC
is just over a year old and Windows XP has developed a
problem. Upon starting it stops at a black screen saying
that the following file is missing or
corrupt..windows/system32/config/system. It then says that
I must insert the Windows XP setup CD to repair the
problem. But my new PC did not come with a Windows XP CD,
it was pre-installed. It does some with a security sticker
on the unit displaying my product ID and a recovery disc
but that disc doesnt work because its asking for the setup
CD. Now I have paid for the software so shouldn't have to
but another copy of the software at £180, what can I do?

Many thanks for nay help thats offered !

Hi Salim

Try here:

"How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry That Prevents Windows XP from Starting"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307545

With a Recovery Disk I'm not sure if you can access the Recovery Console, but you can with the 6 XP setup disks:

Home Edition Original

Pro Original
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291

Home Edition + SP1

Pro + SP1

You are correct that this sucks, however, the company from which you got
the computer must have given you a way to recover Windows. Call them
for tech support and/or have them ship you a cd. The sticker on the
case is your Product Key, which you must have. Otherwise, take the
machine to a good local repair shop which will be able to fix it for
you.

Hi:
When you get your system up and running again. Make sure you create a MS-DOS
start up disk and keep it handy. I have the same type system and this has
helped me more that once. Right click floppy drive/ click format/ check
create ms-dos startup disk/ click start.

I'm slightly confused on how a boot floppy would help the OP with his
problem of no XP CD.........

Borrow an OEM XP CD from a friend, and use your Product Key to run the
Repair install.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

Instead of waitng until windows has booted up & requests the setup CD, boot
the computer with your recovery CD in the CD Drive.

If it's bootable then follow instructions to reinstall windows.

Hope this helps
