No Windows Sounds

Fred Rogers

None of the sounds associated with windows XP (windows startup, shutdown,
mail notification) seem to work. I don't have any problems with sound
otherwise. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Right click on the sound icon in the system tray(where speaker icon and
clock is). Select, adjust audio properties. Select, sound, tab. Go to sound
scheme and from the drop down menue select Windows Default.

I have the same problem described below. I have tried the fixes below and no
luck. It is like my system is permanently set on "No Sound". I can test the
sounds and hear them fine in the control panel. Applications which use sound
also work fine. I added an MP3 plugin to my Nero Ultra 6 software at about
the time the problem started. Unistalling this software did not help the
problem. My guess is that some Windows XP system file got corrupted.

Any help out there is greatly appreciated.

Try "Where did my sounds go?" from MVP Kelly Theriot's site here:

I had already been there (kellys-korner-xp) before I posted my message above.
None of the fixes worked.

I really believe it is a corrupted registry entry. When I create a new user
on my system, all of the Windows sounds are there for the new user. Since
there are only a million entries for each user it is hard to say which one it
is. I looked over the obvious ones with regedit but could not find anything
different between the new user and my original user id.

Well I finally gave up and set myself up as a new user. It was a couple of
hours of work on a rainy Saturday evening. I was able to clean up some
Windows settings in the process. My Windows sounds are back.

It was not that I missed the sounds that I went through the trouble of
getting them back. I was afraid that if I had done something to corrupt the
registry, there was no telling what else may have been damaged besides the
Windows sounds.
