no video

hello ..im running windows xp on my pc .. when windows boots all is well and
windows loads but then when its supposed to go to the welcome screen .. my
screen goes black and all i see is my mouse pointer .. does anyone know what
would cause this?

Boot the computer into VGA mode (hit f8 at startup, and select it from the
list.)
Try updating video drivers and see if that helps.
