Since I installed microsoft digital image it promises that the videos
will have a thumbnails but instead there are only the generic player
thumbnails. My Adobe elements 4 and Picassa have no trouble showing the
first picture of the video as the thumbnail. Can anyone help?

Hi,

Which file type is affected? Meanwhile, try this command from Start/Run
dialog:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Hi,

Download FileExtInfo.zip from here.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Unzip and run the tool. Select ".avi" from the list and generate a (file
association) report. Include the contents of the report in your reply.

Hi drclaude,

The thumbnail extractor is correctly set in the registry. I believe this
problem may be caused by one of the third-party Multimedia Codecs. You can
isolate the problem by disabling third-party Codecs one at a time and
testing.

MMCompView v1.10 - View installed Codec and ActiveX filters and enable /
disable them:
